My garden, which began as a couple of pots in a courtyard, is now building and growing. I’m finding out how much time it takes to maintain a healthy garden. I’m also learning how to dry herbs, propagate plants and get rid of pests naturally so as to stay relatively ‘organic’.
My kitchen garden has watercress, parsley, lettuce, spinach, rocket, chillis, oregano, basil, thyme, sage, rosemary, bay tree, limes, oranges, lemons and tomatoes.
I am fighting aphids, caterpillars and slugs and so far winning most of those battles. I have a bandicoot who loves digging underneath my newly planted steppables, but he/she is not doing any harm – I just have to cover the holes every couple of days.
I have a Duranta Erectus (Sweet Memories) which was planted in memory of my beautiful sister, Shanye. I am propagating cuttings so that she can take over the world, or at least my world.
I am in love with the stages of leaf shape and colour in my garden and am documenting these changes. These photographs are ‘bearing fruit’ in my studio in both digital and painted works.
